Hastings Cut-off
Hasting's Cut-off is legendary. He convinced the Donner Party to go this way. It was a shorter route, but took so long that they did not get to the mountains until the snow started falling. Months later and several acts of cannibalism later, the remaining members of the party were rescued. One can see the valley that this cut off used to connect to the main trail on the Humboldt River. The other side of the road shows the haven that this devilish cut-off finally lead to. (One emigrant described the cut-off as the Hastings Longtripp.) This marker is just south of Beowawe on the highway.
