Washoe Causeway
Virginia City had discovered silver and the rush was on. The Ophir Mine was the first large mine and they needed a place to mill their ore. They built that mill on the Ophir Creek on the edge of Washoe Lake. However, they had to get the ore over the marsh lands around the lake. Hence they built a mile long, wooden causeway for the wagons to travel. When the lake level is down, one can still walk that causeway. The first picture was my first indication of a possible post for the causeway. Then came a better post and finally the causeway became evident. Not far from the causeway were these rocks. There is not another pebble here, let alone a rock. What were they used for? (By the way, this is not so easy to get to, although the freeway was always in my site.)
